That Shaw Thing
That Shaw Thing a lively clarinet-led six-piece paying homage to the sounds of groups such as the Grammercy Five and the Benny Goodman Sextet
That Shaw Thing is available for dates on the jazz festival and gig circuit from Summer 2007 onwards and we are currently working on an album release to coincide with this.
Tony Wright the bands leader says “As a new challenge, to move away from the. function band world, I decided to work on something with a more specific sound, for which I can arrange, write original music, tour, and produce recordings. I have always admired the clarinet-led groups of the 30s and 40s, being particularly inspired from the age of twelve by Artie Shaw. Hence That Shaw Thing was conceived – not a tribute band as such, but inspired by the work of musicians such as Shaw, Goodman, Dodds, Bigard, and a host of others who came into view with the passing years.
I don’t take too many liberties with famous hits such as Summit Ridge Drive and Dr Livingstone I Presume: I know you will enjoy hearing the sound recreated in a live situation. However, it is fun to treat other well-known songs in a similar style, and to take some sounds out to where Shaw and Goodman might have gone, had they still been around. There is also the opportunity to showcase some original compositions within the genre.”
